I think the worst review is no review. So i'm pleading the fifth on my experience and hope you get the picture.

What's European about it?

Posted by chachachachia on 9/12/2009

I visited for a bridal party last week. I received a "european facial", "swedish massage", and "deluxe spa pedicure". The facial was terrible, and that's an understatement. The massage felt more like a light tickle. The pedicure was a basic service that had nothing deluxe with it. It was expensive and I felt as if I would have wasted my afternoon if it wasn't for my girlfriends' company. The chicken salad was good, but it was ordered in from Puffy Muffin (the maid-of-honor saw a front desk employee bring in the bags), so I can't give credit to Athena except for charging me an extra $3 for the d4mn sandwich! Nothing was very impressive. The wine glasses are plastic. I saw nothing European except the service menu that claimed certain services were "European" for no apparent reason. I wouldn't have allowed my best friend to have her bridal party here if I had read the reviews first, so please don't let YOUR friends waste their money, time, and an afternoon.

I have been to Athena Health Club Spa twice: once for a massage and spray on tanning & the other time for a facial. The reasons I didn't go back after my two visits were stated in mbeachy's review. The food snacks were extremely overpriced... the massage was barely satisfactory for the price I payed... the facial left my skin more irritated afterwards than the way it was when I went in... and the locker rooms and service rooms were beautiful to the naked eye but the linens were horrible, the cleaning products left bleach smells, and in attempt to cover the smells there were cheap waxy fragrance things behind the toilets and in corners... the kind you see in gas stations. Gross. The worst of all was the tan that was applied by a misty squirt gun. Tan was streaky, extra dark and looked blotted/splotchy around my knees/ankles/elbows/hairline, and although the product smelled nice, once it faded (about 4 days later) it left my skin with spots... and a lot of them! I looked like a leper! After reading mbeachy's comment about what that customer found in a massage room makes me never want to even admit again that I have recieved a service here!

5 Star Failure

Posted by mbeachy on 6/16/2009

I know saying Athena is a 5 Star Failure may seem exaggerated, but that's exactly what the business is: exaggerated and completely embellished. Coming from southern California and being an avid traveller in Europe, i've been to my fair share of spas and health clubs, especially those that are acclaimed 5 Star. From touring the Athena facility with a conceited female who spoke only of her health problems and her spa experiences without any concern of mine, to another member finding a male rubber in a massage room, i'm surprised this business is still open! The receptionists over the phone and the manager I met both claimed Athena was "more than a 5 star European spa," but I cannot see how! They sell costco wholesale products for more than four times their worth, the showers contain shampoo (no conditioner) that completely ruined my hair, their robes and towels felt crunchy (if-you-will) and smelled of bleach, their fitness area never had more than two women working out at one time, and they really seem to stress that "they're the only European day spa in Tennessee," but don't even have a men's locker room, don't allow free skin swimming, don't have mud baths or true European signature services, and don't allow men in any area other than massage rooms, they give every reason anyone could want a European spa to be turned away. The receptionists were friendly but had to refer to either a manager or a booklet (maybe a manual) to answer any of my questions, including simple ones regarding basic services! Uneducated and conceited staff make patrons and club members such as myself never want to come back. Maybe this is why nobody does! (Why else would the work out areas be so empty, and whenever I scheduled a spa service they were never already booked?) I would NOT reccomend this facility to anyone unless they like throwing their money away, because that's exactly what I did for far too long!
